What is the Sandwich Ministry?
Our Lady of Hope Church has been part of a very special ministry for the past 5 years. After a Confirmation class found a service project very fulfilling they brought it to the parish level. This project was with Uncle Pete and the Sandwich Ministry. Our parish has adopted this ministry three times a year, holding collections in February, June and October. Parishioners of all ages are invited to take part. Lunch bags are distributed and returned the following week, filled with sandwiches and other lunch items. Bags include: -2 meat sandwiches on white or whole wheat bread (no mayonnaise or butter), -2 hard boiled eggs, -1 small bag of potato chips, -1 piece of fruit (apple, banana or orange), -2 cookies or a small candy bar and a paper napkin.
Led by "Uncle Pete", as he is known, the Sandwich Ministry delivers lunches and other supplies to schools, the homes and shelters for men, women & children. Volunteers travel all over Chicago and the suburbs handing out supplies where they are needed. Numerous parishes take part in this ministry by collecting lunches or making sandwiches. Together we have answered God’s call to feed the hungry.
When I was hungry,
you gave me to eat!
